Remington Keyboard Layout
Understanding the mechanical typewriter legacy layout popular in state government examinations.
What is the Remington Layout?
The Remington Keyboard layout is a direct port of the traditional mechanical Hindi typewriters onto standard QWERTY computer keyboards. Because the typewriter keys were physically mapped, computer fonts were built to display Hindi characters when corresponding QWERTY keys are pressed.
The two most common typewriter fonts used are:
- Kruti Dev (कृतिदेव): The default standard in government bodies in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
- Devlys (देवलिस): Very similar to Kruti Dev, used interchangeably in commercial environments and publishing houses.
Remington Layout vs Unicode Inscript
When choosing between Remington and Inscript, keep the following differences in mind:
| Feature | Remington (Kruti Dev / Devlys) | Mangal Inscript (Unicode) |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying Font | Legacy non-Unicode fonts (ANSI format) | Standard System Unicode fonts (Mangal) |
| Complexity | High (requires extensive Alt codes for half-letters) | Medium (uses phonetic sequences and halants) |
| Internet Usage | Not supported directly (renders as gibberish without font) | Fully supported across all web pages & mobile phones |
