How Typing WPM & Accuracy Are Calculated
1. The Standard Word Metric
A standard "word" in touch typing evaluations is defined as exactly 5 keystrokes (including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces). This ensures speeds can be objectively compared, regardless of how long individual words are in a given paragraph.
2. Gross Speed (Raw WPM)
Gross Words Per Minute (Raw WPM) is a metric of your physical speed. It registers how quickly your fingers can tap layout keys, disregarding whether you made any mistake along the way.
3. Net Speed (Net WPM)
Net Words Per Minute is the most important metrics because it penalizes mistakes. If you make typing errors, they are subtracted from your total standard words before dividing by the time duration.
4. Net Accuracy Percentage
Accuracy calculates how close you were to an error-free typing performance. A Net Accuracy rate below 90% typically implies that you are typing too fast for your muscle memory control, and you should slow down.
