How to Learn Punjabi Typing

A comprehensive beginner's guide to mastering Gurmukhi Raavi Unicode layouts and Asees font legacy keyboards for Punjabi typing.

1. Understanding Punjabi Keyboard Layouts

Punjabi uses the Gurmukhi script and is typed using two main keyboard frameworks depending on exam guidelines, administrative preferences, or historical usage:

  • Raavi Unicode (ਰਾਵੀ): The standardized phonetic Unicode system approved by the Government of Punjab for official state administrative work. It aligns with the national InScript standard layout. This layout is mandatory for most government recruitment exams (such as PSSSB Clerk, Punjab Police, and PSPCL).
  • Asees Font Layout (ਅਸੀਸ): A legacy ASCII-based font layout. It is highly intuitive because it maps Punjabi sounds to phonetically similar English keys (e.g., typing 'p' maps to 'ਪ', 'k' maps to 'ਕ'). It is widely taught in typing schools and used in offline desktop publishing.

2. Setting Up Your System Keyboard (Raavi)

To practice typing in Raavi Unicode, you must enable the Gurmukhi input layout on your operating system:

For Windows 10 & 11:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region.
  2. Click Add a Language, search for "Punjabi" (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ), and install the pack.
  3. Under Punjabi options, ensure "Punjabi (Gurmukhi)" or "Raavi" keyboard is selected.
  4. Toggle between English and Punjabi typing modes using the shortcut Win + Space.

3. Home Row Finger Positions

Keep your fingers resting on the Home Row keys at all times and return to these positions immediately after pressing keys on the upper or lower rows.
